About Us

Our Team
All of us here at Bay Area Bikes are obsessed with bikes—road, mountain, BMX, cyclocross, and even unicycles!  We commute by bike, day in-day out, rain or shine. We love and live bicycles and hope we can pass that passion on to you!
Our main focus is to educate people on all the benefits of cycling as a lifestyle.  From the person that wants to ride a few miles a day for his health to the individual who has ditched her automobile and made the jump to zero-emissions commuting--we listen to your needs and work with you to make your ride perfect.

Our Bikes

We carry a healthy stock of commuter, cargo, folding, hybrid, single speed, road, mountain and cyclocross bikes to suit your personal needs. We have several options for children--from the Yuba cargo bikes to trailers, balance bikes and their first geared bike. We are reknowned as being the East Bay's folding bike experts.

All our bikes are backed with a full manufacturer’s warranty, which includes lifetime frame warranty and we provide free, preventative maintenance for one full year.

Our Service

Our service staff is meticulous in every detail of caring for your bike.  We also understand that your bike is a big part of your life, so we strive for the quickest turn around time possible (often overnight on most repairs)! With tune-ups starting at just $80, let our expert mechanical staff bring your bike to its best riding condition!

Our Customers
Our #1 goal is to make sure you enjoy your cycling experience as much as we do! We want you to be happy with your bike. No exceptions. We treat every customer equally; whether you’re riding a 20 year-old clunker or a brand new carbon race machine. We’re all cyclists, plain and simple. And you’re into it for the same reasons we are!

Our History

Clay moved to San Francisco from Missouri with a bike, a bag and wee bit of cash.  Clay has raced mountain, road and cyclocross and rides everyday, sometimes on our iconic penny-farthing.  Having worked only in bike shops (other than the bike-powered paper route), his destiny was set.  How lucky to be able to work everyday at something you love!

Glenda moved to the Bay Area in 2006 from Seattle so that she could ride her bike anyday she wanted, without having to think about donning rain gear. With careers in business management and mobile phone technology in her rear view mirror, she wasn't quite ready for that bike shop/coffee stand/on a beach that she'd dreamed of.

Long story short, we decided to purchase the existing Bay Area Bikes in 2008, despite the economic downturn and the rather abandoned look of uptown Oakland. Since then we have seen the neighborhood blossom as the heart of the East Bay's art and food scene. We've seen the upsurge in everyday cyclists that we knew would happen. We've seen the bicycling infrastructure around us improve every year (but with a lot more to go!)

In 2009 we started to offer bike rentals in Jack London Square and now offer bike service and repair there as well.  In 2011, city officials of Pittsburg in Contra Costa County wanted a bike shop in their newly revitalized downtown.  We looked around, saw 47 miles of bike infrastructure and hardly anyone riding.  So we decided to give the community what they wanted--and needed. It makes us proud to see more and more people riding their bikes in East CCC.

We're still an independent, locally-owned and owner-managed bike shop.  As co-producers of Pedalfest, as EBBC Board member, as champions for all bike riders, we care deeply about our community and those who ride in it.

Thanks for being on the ride with us. We hope to see you soon!
